Nero’s circus
You see, death was the ultimate weapon of imperial tyrants. Thousands were executed on the spot in Rome where St Peter's square now stands. The resurrection gave people a renewed sense of hope because if it signified a victory over death, if it meant eternal life, then suddenly death didn't seem so terrifying. Now, this place [St Peter's square] used to be known as Nero's circus, and it's where Nero crucified Peter upside down. But because of what the resurrection symbolised it meant that Christians like Peter were so fearless in the face of such persecution.
The early Christians were picked off one by one by the authorities. But the message of the resurrection endured. This is the prison in Rome where Paul spent the last years of his life...
