The Whithorn Society

For more than 20 years the Whithorn Society has provided a warm bond of friendship for all its members as they have become involved with St. Ninian’s Church. The minute books show the changing names of friends past and present who have taken part in the various activities which have enabled fellowship to blossom outwith the walls of St. Ninian’s Church.

The Membership has never been large but apart from slight doubts in the early 1970’s, has always seen itself as being a strong part of the Church community.

Its purpose is to provide an outlet for social activities, informal discussion and community service, with membership not restricted to Church members.

Its activities are mainly of a social nature. Events are costed on a basis which permits a small accumulation of funds to enable donations to be made to the Church and worthy local charities.

Most events still take place in the homes of the members so that a warm friendly atmosphere can be maintained. In the summer, various outdoor events such as treasure hunts, barbeques, walks, picnics and caravan weekends have taken place with varying degrees of success — depending upon the weather.

From time to time various intellectual exercises have taken place with other sessions given to evenings where items of interest have been brought to our attention by guest speakers. it has always endeavoured to encourage the younger members of the congregation to participate in the various activities, consequently it has a family atmosphere — an extended family to which we all belong - the Whithorn Society.

Over the last few years the Whithorn Society has supported a number of different causes, amongst them Age Concern, Help the Aged and Crisis at Christmas.
